Plugins are one of the most powerful reasons that people love WordPress as a content management system to power their blogs. Simply speaking, plugins add additional features to your WordPress website which are not present with the core installation of WordPress.
There are thousands of free and paid plugins and you can add almost every functionality that you come across on other professional sites to your own WordPress site by using one of the plugins. Plugins can add security features, can improve SEO, can add contact forms, can prevent spam. You think of a feature and there is every likelihood that the WordPress community has developed a plugin for that.
However, you should not be install every other plugin available. Because by adding plugins you add additional load on your website and using too many WordPress plugins can slow down your website.
Installing WordPress plugins is really easy. All you have to do is to go to the Plugins menu. But first you click on Installed Plugins to see the plugins that have already been installed. From here you can deactivate existing plugins. And you can also activate the plugins that are still deactivated.
And when you click on Add New button in this screen, you will seen listing of all the available plugins on WordPress.org. You can sort these plugins by different parameters of search like Features, Popular or Recommended etc. You can also search your desired plugin by typing its name in the search box.
All you have to do is to click on Install Now button for your desired plugin and WordPress will ask for confirmation that you really want to install this plugin. When you confirm, the plugin will be installed within a few seconds. You click on the Activate Plugin button and the plugin will be activated for your website.
Once a plugin is installed, you can further tweak its different settings. Some plugins add a menu item to the left side menu while for others you will need to adjust the settings from just below the plugin.
